Defend People's Korea!

by New Worker correspondent

NCP leader Andy Brooks joined other comrades at a protest picket outside the American embassy in London last weekend. Braving the abnormally hot weather to show solidarity with People’s Korea the protesters were marking the 76th anniversary of the Korean war and demanded an end to the American occupation of south Korea.
The demonstration was called by the Korean Friendship Association (KFA), whose chairman, Dermot Hudson said “We are here today picketing the US embassy because a few days ago on Tuesday 25th of June, it was the 76th anniversary of the provocation of the Korean War which is known as the Fatherland Liberation War in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The was not a war between Koreans but between a small country, the DPR Korea, and the American empire. Indeed it was a war against Korea, against the Korean people.
“Let’s remember that the United States is not some wonderful land of ‘freedom and democracy ‘ but the head of a giant corrupt empire that gave you Jeffrey Epstein and has military bases in every corner of the globe”.
A message of solidarity from KFA Germany was read out by KFA organisation secretary Alan Bolon which stated “The US-imperialists threw 600 000 tons of bombs and napalm on the DPRK. 600 000 tons. Almost four times as much as on Japan during the Pacific war. An unimaginably high number. One ton is 1,000 kilograms. So the US-imperialists threw 600 million kilos of bombs and napalm bombs on Korea. Those bombs did not just hit military targets. These bombs destroyed over 50,000 industrial facilities, over 4,500 school buildings, almost 600 scientific facilities, over 8000 cultural and media facilities and over two million dwelling houses. That´s a two with six zeros.
“But has there been any reparation? Any apology? No, to the contrary! The US imperialists still try to destroy the DPRK. Until this day the ‘United Nations Command’ troops, including soldiers from Germany and the United Kingdom are stationed in south Korea... Until this day the US imperialists threaten the DPRK with aggressive military manoeuvres and try to economically destroy the DPRK with sanctions”.

KFA pickets Foreign Office!

by New Worker correspondent

NCP leader Andy Brooks joined other Korean solidarity campaigners outside the Foreign Office in London last weekend to protest against the unjust sanctions imposed by the British government on the Songdowon International Children's Camp in the DPR Korea. Picketers held placards denouncing the sanctions and demanded that they be rescinded at once in Whitehall on Saturday at the protest called by the Korean Friendship Association (KFA). On the line KFA Chairman  Dermot Hudson stressed that the sanctions against the camp  are totally unfair as it is a children’s camp not a missile base or a nuclear complex. Leaflets denouncing the sanctions were given out while a journalist interviewed Dermot and some of the other protesters.

The Korean revolution: today and tomorrow!

by New Worker correspondent
Alan Bolon, Dermot Hudson & Andy Brooks

NCP leader Andy Brooks returned to a community hall in south London to join other Korean solidarity campaigners at a meeting in Brixton on Saturday to remember Kim Il Sung and discuss the meaning of Korean-style socialism and its relevance in today’s world.
Called by the Korean Friendship Association the audience heard openings from KFA Chair Dermot Hudson, Alan Bolon from the West of England KFA and Andy Brooks from the NCP.
Alan Bolon said “Korean-style socialism has achieved historic success, the Korean style of socialism continues to achieve success and, this is because it is based on the solid ideological foundations of the epoch – making Juche philosophy and, on the experiences and great achievements of Kim Il Sung whose birthday we celebrate today”. Dermot Hudson said that “the Democratic People's Republic of Korea shows in practice that a new world of social justice is possible. All the internal and external policies of the DPRK serve the interests of the people in every possible way”.  And Andy Brooks recalled the time he met Kim Il Sung in 1990 and the role that the leader of the Korean revolution had played throughout his life in the struggle against Japanese colonialism and American imperialism that ended in victory and the building of the people’s republic in the liberated northern part of the Korean peninsula.
The openings inspired the discussion that followed as friends and comrades, old and new, looked at the relevance of Kimilsungism to the world communist movement and the struggle against US-led imperialism and its lackeys throughout the world today.
The well-attended meeting was watched  on livestream by over 800 people. A further 1,300 have now
seen it on YouTube’s SONGUN007 channel!

A glimpse of the future

by John Maryon

Amid the doom and gloom of capitalism's decline the rise of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea can inspire the working class. Dermot Hudson, of the Korean Friendship Association, spoke enthusiastically about his experiences in that socialist country at the latest meeting of the Ipswich New Worker Supporters Group. Members  of a number of left wing parties, religious groups and Palestine supporters joined the event intended to both increase awareness of the  New Worker and to build left unity.
The speaker described how the country is rapidly developing, with building work transforming Pyongyang, as despite harsh sanctions the economy continues to grow. The sanctions were imposed at the behest of the United States to punish Korea for defending itself. There can be no doubt that without its nuclear deterrent People's Korea would have suffered the same fate as Iraq, Syria and Yugoslavia or be exposed to the threats faced today by Iran, Venezuela and Cuba.
The appalling propaganda from the Western media, including decades of lies, misinformation and snide remarks by the ‘British Brainwashing Corporation’ shows their fear and hatred of the DPRK.  Not because of some supposed military action but the fear that a successful non- capitalist state is creating a beautiful and prosperous new form of society.
The meeting also discussed the capitalist crises in Britain and overseas. Of particular concern was the rise of the far right supported by  less well educated groups of former Labour supporters. It was agreed that the next meeting of the Ipswich New Worker Group would be devoted to this issue with the aim of developing an effective strategy for creating a more progressive society. Future topics will also include the international situation and Green issues. The newly established Ipswich New Worker Group continues to develop and gain in strength. It's ultimate goal to put the Red flag over Ipswich!

Kim Jong Il – an outstanding Korean leader!

by New Worker correspondent

NCP leader Andy Brooks joined other Korean solidarity campaigners in south London last weekend to look at the development of the DPR Korea’s nuclear deterrent and  the other outstanding achievements of Kim Jong Il when he was at the helm. Achievements spelt out in a paper sent by the DPRK embassy in London which said that “the US went successively to war with Iraq, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan and went on to place the DPRK on the list of ‘targets of pre-emptive nuclear strike’ and make it a policy to use nuclear weapons and deal a pre-emptive strike to the country, while intensifying military threats to it with huge armed forces. But no war broke out in the Korean peninsula because Chairman Kim Jong Il (1942-2011) frustrated the US' attempts at aggression by strengthening the country's defence capabilities in every way”.
The Korean Friendship Association (KFA) meeting at a community centre just a stone’s throw from Brixton station brought a number of seasoned campaigners together while a hundred more from this country and all over the world watched the proceedings on YouTube.
Dermot Hudson, the KFA chair, opened on the theme of why the DPRK was right to have a nuclear deterrent which was taken up by other speakers which included Andy Brooks and Theo Russell from the NCP as well as Ly Kimlong of the KFA Cambodia, who is currently studying in the United Kingdom.
Dermot said that Kim Jong Il stands in history as a strong figure who faithfully upheld and creatively developed Juche-based socialism – the great idea first pioneered by President Kim Il Sung. Juche is not just an abstract theory; it is a people-centred philosophy that places political independence, economic self-reliance and self-defensive national security at the heart of state-building. Under Kim Jong Il's leadership, Juche was transformed into a powerful guiding force capable of defending socialism in one of the most hostile geopolitical environments in the world.
Closely linked to Juche is the historic role of the Korean People's Army (KPA). The KPA is not merely a military force; it is the pillar of the revolution, a defender of the Korean people and a symbol of national sovereignty. Through decades of confrontation, war threats and military encirclement, the KPA has stood firm ensuring that the DPRK remains unconquered and respected.
The KFA chair also denounced the American and south Korean puppet regime moves to "denuclearise " the DPRK pointing out that “recent developments and ongoing events have proved the DPRK's stance on nuclear weapons to be a 100 per cent and a 1,000 per cent correct”.

Juche in Wrexham!

by New Worker correspondent

The Korean Friendship Association (KFA) participated in the Wrexham Socialist Bookfair, organised by Red Bookfairs, at the Ty Pawb Centre in Wrexham last weekend.
The KFA stall, run by KFA Chair Dermot Hudson, had on display the works People’s Korea leader Kim Jong Un as well as classics by great leader Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il and as well as literature from the DPRK and the KFA. Discussions were held with visitors to the stall. Leaflets were given out and literature was sold.
The KFA will be back in north Wales and will expand its work in north Wales and other areas of the UK even if some reactionaries do not like it! We will fly the flag of Juche high!

Behind the mirror of lies

by New Worker correspondent

A hotel in the west end of Glasgow was recently the venue for the first Korean Friendship Association event in Glasgow for several years. Hosted by the Stand for Peace pacifist group  who regularly hold vigils in Glasgow and other Scottish cities and towns, it was the occasion for KFA UK’s Chair, Dermot Hudson, to address a packed audience on the theme of People’s Korea behind the Mirror of Lies. The audience, which included members of No to Nato, the NCP and other Scottish communist movements, was broadly sympathetic and genuinely curious about the DPR Korea, although one person seemed to take the Guardian and BBC too seriously.
One of the lies which Dermot Hudson exposed was that the Western media often report that senior DPRK figures had been executed, only to have egg on their face when they reappear in public months later. This was just one small example of the lies constantly pumped out by the puppet regime in south Korea and their imperialist backers. On a lighter note, he caused amusement by citing an American who seriously claimed that while in the DPRK a power failure stopped a train which meant that he and other passengers then had to get out and push.
The reality is that DPRK citizens enjoy free housing, free health care, and free education. On his recent visit he noted a vast amount of construction work in Pyongyang and a vast programme of rural housing and factory building is underway.
After his speech a healthy discussion took place around such matters as landownership as well as all sorts of questions about the political and social structures in People’ Korea. Hudson said the DPRK was an example of the Marxist-Leninist dictatorship of the proletariat. The impact of the recent deepening of relations between Russia and the DPRK was also discussed. To any doubting Thomases in the audience the speaker, while aware of the considerable expense involved, said that a visit would confirm his statements.
It is to be hoped that this resumption of KFA activity north of the border will be followed up by future events.

US out of Korea!

by New Worker correspondent

NCP leader Andy Brooks joined other Korean solidarity activists outside the US embassy in London on Friday 20th June to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War and call for an end to the American occupation of south Korea.
The Friday evening protest was called by the Korean Friendship Association (KFA) whose chair, Dermot Hudson, said “we are here today in front of the US Embassy , the embassy of the American empire , the empire of evil, because on the 25th June it will be the 75th  anniversary of the provocation of the Korean War by the US imperialists and their puppets .The Korean War never really ended because no peace treaty was ever concluded only an armistice”. Dermot Hudson also said that the US imperialists wanted to invade the DPR Korea not only to destroy the socialist system but  also to seize the valuable rare earth deposits of the DPRK .
A message of support was received from KFA Germany which was read out . In part the message said “ Until this day 30,000 US-soldiers occupy the southern part of the Korean peninsula. Until today the US have nuclear weapons stationed in South Korea and they still continue their aggressive military manoeuvres against the DPRK. That is why it is so important to show solidarity with socialist Korea and openly fight against the US-aggression. Your picket here in front of the US embassy in London today is an important part in the fight against the US imperialist aggression”.

Juche lights the way!

Dermot Hudson and Andy Brooks
by New Worker correspondent

Andy Brooks joined other Korean solidarity campaigners in central London last weekend to mark the 113th  anniversary of the birth of the great Korean leader, Kim Il Sung and celebrate the triumph of the Korean revolution. At the Chadswell Centre the NCP leader joined Dermot Hudson and a university lecturer to open a discussion on the Juche Idea and Korean-style socialism.
Dermot Hudson, the Chair of the Korean Friendship Association that called the meeting, said "in today 's troubled world , one country stands out as a beacon , a true fortress of socialism and independence; the Democratic People's Republic of Korea or People's Korea”. Andy Brooks recalled the great achievements of President Kim Il Sung and his wisdom. He also said it was wrong to equate Juche with nationalism. He pointed out that it is a falsehood to say Juche is fascism, as some do in the bourgeois media. If this was true then the ruling class would adopt Juche instead of denouncing and demonising it. Finally a senior university lecturer from a British university gave a presentation on the theme of Independence, Creativity, Mastery: Juche as Ideology and Theory in Education.
There followed lively discussion on the three presentations. Questions included the issue of DPRK-US relations, visiting the DPRK and the current situation. The need to attract students to the KFA and Juche was stressed as well as working towards more public Korean friendship meetings in London and throughout the country.

Defend People’s Korea!

by New Worker correspondent

NCP leader Andy Brooks joined protesters outside the BBC HQ in London on Tuesday calling for an end to the demonising of the DPR Korea by the state-owned broadcasting service. A letter of protest from the Korean Friendship Association to the Director-General and Management board of the BBC was handed to a member of the BBC staff.
Dermot Hudson, the Chair of KFA, said “we are here today to protest against the BBC’s persistent demonisation of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) or People’s Korea. No country -apart from maybe Russia and the former Soviet Union – has been lied about more by the BBC than the DPRK. Recently, the BBC or British Brainwashing Corporation has tried to blame the DPRK over the conflict in Ukraine making false allegations and quoted unconfirmed rumours and misleading reports.
“The BBC is an official state broadcaster. It is not independent but run by the British government. It is closely linked to British imperialism and US imperialism…
“The BBC promotes the ideology of market totalitarianism and liberal fascism. The BBC is a tool of the ruling elite and the big monopoly corporations. What is disgusting is that not only does the BBC lie about People’s Korea but it expects us to pay for its lies in the form of the BBC licence fee which is £169 per year”.

Korean solidarity in Bulgaria

by New Worker correspondent

Dermot Hudson, the chair of the UK Korean Friendship Association attended the European Regional Seminar on the Juche Idea on the theme of “Sovereignty, Independence and New International Relations” that was held on the 8th September at the Moskva Park hotel in Sofia, the capital of the former People’s Republic of Bulgaria.
Bulgaria of course was once a socialist country but sadly most traces of socialism have been eliminated by the new regime. The effects of the restoration of capitalism, such as people begging and closed down shops could be seen. Whilst the Metro is very cheap and surprisingly taxi fares as well, some of the prices in the shops looked not that different to the UK.
It had been originally intended to hold the seminar the Finnish capital of Helsinki but the reactionary Finnish authorities (these days puppets of US and world imperialism) refused to allow the entry of a delegation from the Korean Association of Social Scientists. The seminar was moved to Sofia which had previously hosted a similar event in 2019.
The seminar was organised by the European Regional Society for the Study of the Juche Idea and hosted by the Bulgarian Group for the Study of Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism.
The seminar was presided by Prof Matteo Carbonelli secretary general of the European Regional Society for the Study of the Juche Idea (ERSSJI)  who welcomed the participants.
The seminar heard a detailed report of work of the ERSSJI by secretary general Matteo Carbonelli. There was discussion on improving the work of disseminating the Juche idea with suggestions about using simple short videos and graphic propaganda as well using Telegram.
Later the seminar was addressed by Pak Chol Jun, the vice-president of the Korean Association of Social Scientists, who expressed his conviction that the seminar would contribute to the cause of strengthening the struggle for a new independent world. Many delegates from Europe and across the rest of the globe spoke during the conference which also heard online contributions from Ogami Kenichi , the secretary general of the Institute for the Study of the Juche Idea in Japan, noted Russian academic specialist Prof Alexander Voronstov and Keith Bennett, the vice-director general of the ERSSJI.

US out of Korea!

By New Worker correspondent

Korean solidarity activists were outside the US embassy in London on Saturday to demand an end to the American occupation of south Korea. London comrades, including NCP leader Andy Brooks, joined in the protest called by the Korean Friendship Association (KFA) in solidarity with the DPR Korea and all the Korean people campaigning to end the imperialist partition of their country.
US imperialism and its south Korean lackeys attempted to invade Democratic Korea on 25th June 1950. Millions died in the war that ended with an armistice in 1953. But Korea remains partitioned with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) ringed by the nuclear arsenals of US imperialism and facing tens of thousands of American troops based in the south of the divided peninsula.
Every year the anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War is marked by the start of the month of solidarity with the Korean people. In Britain, and throughout the rest of the world, Korean solidarity campaigners meet to demand an end to the American occupation of south Korea and the reunification of the country that has been divided since the end of the Korean War.
“We are here today picketing the US embassy because a few days ago, on Tuesday 25th June, it was the 74th anniversary of the provocation of the Korean War which is known as the Fatherland Liberation War in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” said Dermot Hudson, the Chairman of the KFA.
“The war was not a war between Koreans but between a small country, the DPRK, and the American empire. Indeed it was a war against Korea, against the Korean people.
“The US imperialists, the ringleader of world imperialism and international reactionaries, provoked a war in Korea on the 25th June 1950 by instigating their south Korean puppets to attack the young DPR Korea. The US imperialists were hungry for profits and conquest. The US imperialists fought an unjust, aggressive war against the Korean people. The US imperialists launched a war of conquest against the DPRK , a war to destroy the Juche-based people's democratic system in the DPRK as well as to destroy socialism in Asia and the world.
“We are here to defend the right of the DPRK to exist, to defend its independence, it is time to take a real stand and defend People's Korea from the threat of US aggression. The US is quite openly threatening the DPRK with annihilation, with being "eliminated" from the face of the globe.
“All the time, the US, even as we stand here, the US imperialists are planning regime change in People’s Korea and to overthrow the socialist system”.

Korean solidarity in Berlin

by New Worker correspondent

British members of the Korean Friendship Association (KFA) joined German solidarity workers to discuss the life-time achievements of Democratic Korean leader Kim Jong Il, in Berlin last week. Korean solidarity activists from Germany and the rest of Europe met at the Kom Treff Centre in Berlin last week for a hybrid seminar held under the auspices of the European Regional Committee For Friendship with the Korean People and the Korean Friendship Association of Germany.
The meeting was presided over by KFA UK Chairman, Dermot Hudson, and Jeremy Bierenger Chairman of KFA Germany. Dermot Hudson introduced the meeting stressing that the recent visit of Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to the DPR Korea proves that Democratic Korea is at the centre of world politics.
A recorded version of the keynote address of Christer Lundgren, the chairman of the Sweden-Korea Friendship Association was played at the meeting. He said, in part, that the “ideological and organizational work during Kim Jong Il’s first years in the Central Committee explains why the party, despite great difficulties, has stuck to its ideology and its revolutionary position and maintained its firm base among the working class and the people”.
Dermot Hudson said that “today the Workers’ Party of Korea shines as a Party of Juche , a party of independence and militant anti-imperialism with its own guiding idea, the Juche idea and a party which is not just a mass party in terms of numbers but has members from all walks of life. Today under the guidance of respected Marshal Kim Jong Un, the successor to comrade Kim Jong Il, the Workers Party of Korea continues the work of the great leader comrade Kim Jong Il”.
Jeremy Biergener, the Chairman of KFA Germany said in his contribution that “today, Marshal Kim Jong Un is continuing the policy of Comrade Kim Jong Il. Foreigners who visited Pyongyang recently noted that the city has changed a lot. Under the leadership of Marshal Kim Jong Un, new roads the size of small towns have been built, as well as new subways and buses for the convenience of the people of Pyongyang. A new greenhouse was also built in which 1.800 people work and which supplies the population of the socialist capital with high-quality vegetables free of charge”
Sara Russo, Organisation Secretary of KFA Germany pointed out that “I speak for everyone here that we all appreciate his ambition and his hard work in the WPK to proceed to build the WPK as the party of Juche”.
The speech of the Chairman of the Denmark -DPRK Association was read out by Mathias Fantoni who said that “Comrade Kim Jong Il was a pioneer in many ways. He began working tirelessly in the WPK at the very young age of 22. Beforehand, he had excelled in the party and the youth league, as a strong revolutionary with great insight in theory and practical knowledge”.
Alejandro Cao De Benos, who joined the meeting online from Spain, said that the visit of Russian President Putin to the DPRK was highly significant and said “let us honour our Great Leader Kim Jong Il by reaffirming our commitment to the principles he championed. Let us continue to build a strong, prosperous, and independent Korea, guided by the
Juche ideology and inspired by his enduring legacy. As we look to the future, we draw strength from his example, knowing that the path he laid out will lead us to greater heights.
His spirit lives on in our hearts and our actions, propelling us forward in our pursuit of a brighter, more prosperous future.”

Eyewitness Korea

Alan Bolon and Dermot Hudson
by New Worker correspondent

The DPR Korea is marching along the road to socialism. That was the message of Dermot Hudson who has recently returned from a visit to north Korea and that was the main theme of his talk at a Korean Friendship Association (KFA) meeting in the central London last weekend.
Andy Brooks and Michael Chant, the leaders of the NCP and the RCPB (ML), were in the audience that included other KFA members in London and a guest from KFA Poland. The meeting was also livestreamed on the internet which attracted participation throughout the world.
Dermot Hudson said that the people’s government is carrying out massive construction work in the capital, Pyongyang and that he saw the newly built Hwasong Street neighbourhood that is about the same size as a London borough or a small city. He said that the DPR Korea is carrying out massive housing construction not under ideal conditions but under the pressure of sanctions and military threats. But there are no homeless or beggars in the DPRK – unlike other Asian countries under the thumb of imperialism.
Dermot also spoke about his recent trip to Germany at the invitation of KFA Germany – taking part in a May Day march in Kassel, visiting the DPRK embassy in Berlin as well as the Volkskammer restaurant and the Ernst Thalmann Memorial Centre in Hamburg that reflects on Germany's communist history.
The meeting also heard Alan Bolon from the West of England branch of the KFA give a talk on the Juche Idea using a flip chart with diagrams to illustrate different aspects of the ideology that is the foundation of Korean-style socialism.

Kim Il Sung: A hero to remember

Dermot Hudson and Andy Brooks
by New Worker correspondent

NCP leader Andy Brooks joined other Korean solidarity campaigners at a meeting in central London in April to mark the 112th anniversary of the birth of the great Korean leader, Kim Il Sung and celebrate the successes of Korean-style socialism.
Dermot Hudson, the chair of the Korean Friendship Association that called the meeting praised Kim Il Sung, the leader of the Korean communist movement that drove out the Japanese colonialists and established a people’s government after the defeat of Japan in the Second World War. The revolutionary path charted by Kim Il Sung led to the establishment of a people’s republic based on the Juche Idea and Korean-style socialism is now being followed by Kim Jong Un, he said.
Juche-based socialism is not a copy of another country but the essence of the experience of generations of Korean revolutionaries. “In today’s People’s Korea there is free health care, free education, virtually free housing, low cost food and no individual taxation. There aren’t any homeless people, beggars or drug addicts in People’s Korea”.
Andy Brooks recalled his first visit to the DPRK and his meeting with President Kim Il Sung as part of an NCP delegation in 1990. He said how impressed the delegation of the New Communist Party was with the development of the DPRK which surpassed their expectations.
The general secretary of the NCP spoke about the victories of Kim Il Sung, who led the Workers’ Party of Korea until his death in 1994, and the outstanding achievements of those who’ve followed in his footsteps. While the people’s government strives for the peaceful re-unification of the Korea peninsula it has to prepare for whatever the American imperialists, who occupy the south, will do next whatever the outcome of the American presidential election in November. We can expect nothing from Biden, a senile old man who barely knows what day it is. Biden is just a pawn of the “deep state” – the most venal and aggressive elements within the American ruling class. But ultimately so is Donald Trump.
Trump did his best meeting Kim Jong Un twice for talks to try to ease tension on the Korean peninsula, but he was constantly thwarted by the hidden hand of the American Establishment in Washington.
A lively Q & A session followed with questions about travel to the DPRK, the nature of internal class enemies in the DPRK and the issue of the DPRK’s relations with neighbouring countries and the meeting closed with the adoption of a solidarity message to Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Defend Democratic Korea!

by New Worker correspondent

Despite bad weather the Korean Friendship Association (KFA UK) picketed the BBC HQ  last weekend. London comrades and Korean solidarity campaigned protested at the ongoing bias of the BBC outside the heavily guarded Broadcasting House in central London.
Dermot Hudson , the KFA Chair denounced the BBC for making a programme in connivance with the south Korean ‘Daily NK’ far-right website pointing out that  "If the BBC were right about the DPRK by now everyone in the DPRK would have starved to death in the DPRK not once but several times over!
“The BBC does not have reporters inside the DPRK . In fact the borders of the DPRK were closed in January 2020 . So the BBC has no access to people in the DPRK".
Dermot Hudson also said that the DPRK has free health-care , free education and free housing but abolished taxation. He also pointed out that the DPRK is an anti-imperialist socialist country that is on the side of the people of the third world.

The Korean war: the first defeat for American imperialism

A contribution to the Friends of Korea committee seminar held at the NCP Centre in July to commemorate the victory of the Korean people over US imperialism and its lackeys.

by Dermot Hudson

July 27th  1953 was the day when the US imperialists finally admitted they could not militarily defeat the DPRK and signed the Korean Armistice Agreement which actually contained a clause stipulating the withdrawal of all foreign forces from the Korean peninsula. But the US reneged on this later.
Mark Clark the commander of US forces in the war wrote “in carrying out the instructions of my government, I gained the unenviable distinction of being the first United States commander in history to sign an armistice without victory.” and US General Bradley admitted that it was  “the wrong war, at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and with the wrong enemy”. These were the confessions of US commanders that they were defeated in the Fatherland Liberation War.
The Fatherland Liberation War, known as the Korean war in the West, is sometimes referred to as the “Unknown War “. This is because the US was defeated and they wanted to cover up their defeat and also cover up the fact they provoked the war. The right-wing, anti-communist  US military historian, Bevin Alexander, who himself had been a US army officer during the Korean war, said it was ‘the first war we lost’. Max Hastings, another right-wing historian, wrote that “many American career officers were  dismayed by the precedent Korea established: the United States had failed to fight a war to a victorious conclusion”.
However much the US tries to dress it up or downplay it, they suffered a total military disaster in Korea. The loss suffered by the US imperialists was nearly 2.3 times greater than what they had suffered in the four years of the Pacific War during World War II. Even according to the heavily doctored and downplayed statistics of the US military, the US lost more than 15 times as many troops in the three years of the war than in nearly 20 years of the Afghan war and nine times as many in 8 years of fighting in Iraq.
The great leader Kim Il Sung said “In this great struggle our people fought determinedly as one in mind under the correct leadership of the party and government and thereby withstood the harsh trials of war honourably and won a historic victory inflicting an ignominious defeat on US imperialism and its running dogs”.
Some people attribute the Korean people’s victory to the internationalist assistance that was given to the DPRK from the People’s Republic of China and the former USSR believing that only big countries can make a difference or only big countries can solve problems. Of course, it needs to be stated that in fact, it was not just the big socialist countries that helped the DPRK but all the socialist countries. There was also a powerful solidarity movement with the DPRK waged in many countries including even the US. In fact, Italian-American congressman Vito Marcantonio, the sole member of the American Labour Party in Congress, voted against the war in the US Congress. In the UK the Communist Party of Great Britain and the Daily Worker opposed the war, as did some Labour MPs to their credit, like the famous Welsh MP S O Davies and Barking MP Tom Driberg.  But the so-called left Labour MP Michael Foot supported it.
In the oppressed colonial countries, the revolutionary peoples intensified their anti-imperialist struggles. In particular, the revolutionary forces of Malaya and Thailand stepped up their armed struggle. However, the best internationalist aid and assistance have no effect unless the revolutionary forces of a given country unite and wage a powerful struggle. History knows many examples of revolutions that were given unstinting assistance but came to nothing because the internal revolutionary forces were not strong enough and the quality of leadership was lacking.
As Kim Il Sung pointed out  “Even small countries can defeat big enemy, once they establish Juche, unite the masses of the people and valiantly rise in battle despite sacrifice. This is a very plain truth of our times which has been borne out by actual life."
During the Fatherland Liberation War, the Korean people fought in the spirit of self-reliance. During the first stage of the war the Korean People’s Army under the command of Kim Il Sung and entirely on its own liberated Seoul, the south Korean puppet capital on the third day of the war. The forces of the heroic KPA defeated the so-called "Invincible US 24th Division" on the 20th July 1950 at Taejon and took its commander General Dean prisoner. Dean was the first US general to be captured by an opposing side. Dean’s general’s pips and boots can be seen in the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum in Pyongyang where you can also see a wonderful diorama of the battle of the Battle of Taejon. Within six weeks the KPA had liberated 90 per cent of the territory of south Korea and 92 per cent of the population. A truly amazing feat.
The US imperialists and reactionaries had made a big miscalculation and greatly underestimated the DPRK, the Korean People’s Army(KPA)  and the Juche-based military tactics of the Korean communist leader, Kim Il Sung, who accumulated vast and unrivalled experience in the 15-year-long anti-Japanese armed struggle.
Kim Il Sung employed unique Juche-based tactics during the Fatherland Liberation War. Based on the Juche idea that people are the masters, he attached importance to the decisive role of people rather than weapons during the war. Basically, he believed that the outcome of war is simply not decided by weapons but by those who hold those weapons.
Kim Il Sung initiated an immediate counter-attack on the aggressors when they provoked the war on the morning of the 25th June 1950. He called a cabinet meeting where he made a speech titled  Let Us Wipe Out the Invaders by a Decisive Counter-Offensive and ordered the Korean People’s Army over to an immediate counter-offensive. Thus the KPA went over to an immediate counter-offensive pushing the south Korean puppets back. This was something unprecedented in the history of warfare!
During the Second World War, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium and France all fell to the invasion of Nazi Germany, seemingly powerless to resist let alone organise a counter-offensive. Even the Soviet Union in June 1941 was not able to go over to a counter-offensive immediately. By launching a counter-offensive quickly Kim Il Sung snatched away the advantage of surprise from the south Korean puppets and US imperialists.
The KPA under the command of Kim Il Sung also created other original tactics such as tunnel warfare. The DPRK later sent tunnelling advisors to Vietnam during their war against American aggression. An article by overseas Korean writer Han Ho Suk wrote that  “North Korea's expertise in digging tunnels for warfare was demonstrated during the Vietnam War. North Korea sent about 100 tunnel warfare experts to Vietnam to help dig the 250 km tunnels for the North Vietnamese and Viet Gong troops in South Vietnam. The tunnels were instrumental in the Vietnamese victory”. Also, there was the original idea of opening a second front behind enemy lines, the creation of aircraft hunting and tank hunting teams and guerrilla warfare.
Revolutionary peoples of the world praised the DPRK’s victory in the Fatherland Liberation War. The Organisation of Solidarity of the Peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America said “Under the superb leadership of Marshal Kim Il Sung and the People’s Army and the people of Korea who inherited the traditions of the glorious anti-Japanese armed struggle fought heroically and defeated US imperialism in defence of the liberty of the fatherland and the gains of the revolution, thereby making a great contribution to the anti-imperialist national liberation struggle of the peoples throughout the world and the struggle for peace in Asia and the world.”
A Cuban Minister stated, “The firm position and confidence of the Korean people and their valour offer a model for the peoples of Vietnam, Cuba, the Congo and other countries of the world”.
Gaston Soumialot President of the supreme council of the Revolution of the Congo also wrote in 1968 "Marshal Kim Il Sung is widely known to the whole world as a gifted military strategist...The US imperialist aggressors who had been bragging about their so-called 'mightiness' in Korea scored a failure in Korea for the first time in their 114 wars of aggression”. And Field Marshal Costa Gomes, who had been president of Portugal after the 1974 ‘carnation revolution’ that ended the dictatorship, said that Kim Il Sung had thwarted all the plans that had been worked out by the US general and military policy makers.
During the Fatherland Liberation War the mask of ‘civilisation ‘ and ‘humanity‘ was torn off the US and there were exposed as mass murderers and aggressors who even used biological and chemical weapons against the Korean people. The Korean war showed that there can be no ‘peaceful co-existence between imperialism and socialism and that there must be an uncompromising struggle against imperialism.
Although the guns fell silent on the 27th July 1953, there was never a permanent or binding peace treaty and the US still has troops in south Korea and has dispatched a nuclear submarine to south Korea. If the US provokes a war the US will suffer a second and a third ‘July 27’ and the Korean people led by respected Kim Jong Un will win and reunify the country!
Glory to the Korean people and the KPA on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the victory in the great Fatherland Liberation War against the US imperialists!

Stepping stones to socialism

Dermot Hudson and Andy Brooks
by New Worker correspondent

Friends of Korea met in London last weekend to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on 2nd September 1948. NCP leader Andy Brooks and Michael Chant from the RCPB (ML) were there along with other veteran campaigners and supporters of the Korean Friendship Association (KFA) event at the Marchmont Centre in Bloomsbury on Saturday.
Opening the meeting KFA UK Chair Dermot Hudson said that “from the first day of its foundation, the DPRK has advanced along the road of Juche, the road of self-reliance, independence and socialism. Juche Korea was not a copy of another country but a unique and original state”.
DPRK diplomat Kim Song Gi  brought greetings from DPRK’s London embassy and told the audience that under the leadership of  Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il the DPRK travelled the road of struggle, never giving up even though the moves of the hostile forces continue to this day. And today, led by Kim Jong Un, the Korean people march confidently into the future.
Other speakers included Jef Bossyut of the Belgium KFA and Jeremy Bieringer (KFA Germany) while  Alejandro Cao De Benos joined us live on video link from Spain. The fact that the DPRK has withstood the test of time, disasters, sanctions and imperialist threats for 75 years, is evidence of the invincible validity of its system and the full support of the korean people in its future”. Alejandro, the  international president of the Korean Friendship Association cannot travel abroad as his passport was confiscated by the Spanish authorities some seven years ago. But they haven’t, as yet,  barred him from the social media.
Christer Lundgren, the Chair of the Swedish-Korean Friendship Association, also joined us on Zoom saying “during its 75 years of existence the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has had extremely challenging difficulties to overcome, including the fierce Fatherland Liberation War, the postwar reconstruction and industrialization, continuous war threats and extreme economic difficulties caused by the imperialists’ manoeuvres to isolate and stifle People’s Korea as well as by the collapse of some other socialist countries”.
This hybrid meeting, spanned half the world. It was a first for the KFA. It certainly won’t be the last.

Remembering the Korean people’s victory

Dermot Hudson and Song Gi Kim

by New Worker correspondent

London comrades returned to the Chadswell centre in central London last weekend to mark the outbreak of the Korean war. The war began with an American attack on the people’s government in north Korea on 25th June 1950. It ended with the Americans signing a humiliating armistice on 27th July 1953.
Chaired by Dermot Hudson speakers, including Theo Russell from the NCP, spoke about the Korean people’s heroic fight against the US imperialists and their lackeys during the war and their efforts to reconstruct their shattered country after the guns fell silent.
Though the American terror bombers had left north Korea in ruins, the masses rallied round the call of Kim Il Sung and the Workers’ Party of Korea to rebuild their shattered country and lead the drive for a modern, independent socialist republic in the free part of the Korean peninsula.
Song Gi Kim, a representative from the Democratic Korean (DPRK) embassy in London pointed out that "in 1950 the Korean war, the fiercest war since the Second World War, broke out. At that time no one ever thought that the DPRK, founded two years before, would defeat the United States, which had been boasting of being the "strongest" in the world with a history of victory in 110 wars since its founding.
“As the world media described, the war was a confrontation between the rifle and the atomic bomb. But the result of the war turned out to be the opposite. The DPRK, a small country in the East, created a miracle by defeating the multi-national forces, which pounced upon a country in the name of the United Nations for the first time in the world."
Dermot Hudson, in his speech, said that the great Korean communist leader, Kim Il Sung “not only humbled the pride of the arrogant US imperialists but smashed the reactionary bourgeois military theory that advocates the omnipotence of weapons over humans.
“The US imperialists not only lost huge amounts of manpower and materials but also suffered irretrievable political and moral defeats. It was a great victory for the Korean people and opened up a new era of anti-US, anti-imperialist struggle. Indeed Korea was the war before Vietnam!"
And Theo Russell pointed out that the US "cannot admit responsibility for aggression against DPRK in 1950 because US still dreams of occupying the north... thus entire might of US and Western systems of thought manipulation is mobilised to maintain the lie. And this includes an apparatus of news, well-financed think tanks, universities, mass media, intelligence agencies"

Korean solidarity in Liverpool

by New Worker correspondent

The Korean Friendship Association of the UK took the fight to defend People’s Korea  to Merseyside by holding a vibrant afternoon meeting on Saturday 20th May at the Casa Bar in the heart of Liverpool’s university district.
Peter Hendy from the Liverpool NCP introduced the meeting saying that “the propaganda offensive against the DPRK remains unabated. To justify US military aggression against the DPRK the propaganda offensive remains relentless and continues unabated. For over six decades the DPRK has been subjected to US military intimidation, provocations, threats and extensive sanctions to politically isolate and destroy the DPRK economy. The US warmongers would like to destroy the DPRK”.
KFA UK Chairman Dermot Hudson addressed the meeting on the subject of the US threat to People’s Korea  pointing out that “In fact, the danger of war and threat to People’s Korea has increased greatly and taken a sinister turn. It is probably at its highest since the end of the Korean War or Fatherland Liberation War in 1953” . He denounced the recent US-south Korea summit and the so-called ‘Washington Declaration ‘ He also drew attention to the participation of British Royal Marines in recent military exercises in south Korea.
“The struggle to defend People’s Korea and expose the aggressive role of the US on the Korean peninsula is also part of the struggle for world peace and for anti-imperialist independence.
“KFA UK demands that all ongoing and planned military exercises by the US and south Korea in south Korea and the surrounding region should be cancelled . US troops should be withdrawn from south Korea along with any US nuclear weapons.
"Dermot concluded by saying “We in the Korean Friendship Association of the UK(KFA UK) believe in defending People’s Korea , Korea of Juche with No Ifs or Buts . The DPRK is the most independent country in the world and has a unique socialist system . The DPRK is a country that abolished taxation yet has free healthcare , free education and even free housing".
The Casa Club was born during the epic struggle of the Liverpool dockers who were sacked when they refused to cross a picket line in the 1990s. The dockers’ struggle began in September 1995 and ended in a one-sided settlement in February 1998. But some of the dockers, who had been paid £130,000 for writing a drama about the dispute for Channel Four, used the money to buy a building to set up a communal hub, not-for-profit bar and an advice centre. It is now a charitable trust that welcomes labour movement use of its rooms and facilities.
